Welcome to the Family!
Bringing home your first Labradoodle puppy can feel a little intimidating, but at Michigan Labradoodles, we’re here to make the transition as enjoyable as possible! This exciting step marks the beginning of a lifelong friendship, and starting off on the right foot makes all the difference. But with any great love story, the beginning comes with a learning curve. That's why we put together this week-by-week guide to help you navigate the first 30 days: what to expect, what to do, and how to make the most of every single moment.
Before Bringing Your Puppy Home
Puppy proofing your environment is the first step. Creating a familiar space they can call home is crucial to their happiness and yours.
Before bringing your puppy home, be sure to:
Set up a dedicated space with a crate, soft bedding, and a few toys.
Tuck away cables, shoes, and anything at floor level that you'd miss.
Pick up an enzymatic cleaner, accidents happen... you'll be thankful!
Designate a potty spot outside so they can learn it from day one.
Have their food, bowls, and other supplies ready before pickup day. (All of our puppies go home with a collar and leash, so you’ll already have those essentials covered!).
Week 1: Settling In
Introduce your puppy to their space gently. Let them sniff around at their own pace. We recommend taking on one new socialization challenge each week, so resist the urge to invite every single person you know over to meet the new addition; it's overwhelming! A quiet first week with your immediate household gives them time to settle in comfortably.
During the day, focus on simple routines like feeding times, bathroom breaks, and short, low-pressure play sessions. This is also a great week to introduce your first basic commands, like “sit” and “stay.” Continue adding new commands week by week as your puppy masters them, and be sure to keep reinforcing the old commands you’ve established.
Crate training is an important first step in helping your puppy feel secure and settled. We recommend starting right away to help establish a consistent routine, making the adjustment easier for you and your puppy. The first few nights can feel a little overwhelming, but keeping things calm and consistent makes all the difference. A familiar blanket or toy can make a big difference in easing the transition!
Week 2: Beginning Bonding & Structure
Week two is a great week to start laying a daily rhythm: consistent wake-up times, feeding windows, play sessions, and nap times. Dogs are creatures of routine, and knowing what comes next helps them thrive.
A few simple ways to help your puppy adjust:
Start building trust through gentle handling, touching paws, ears, and mouth.
Introduce new sounds and textures in controlled, low-pressure ways.
Begin introducing a leash indoors so your puppy can get comfortable wearing it.
You can also start building name recognition through play. Try a simple game of hide-and-seek, calling your puppy’s name and rewarding them when they find you. Keeping it light and fun helps your puppy associate their name with positive experiences.
Week 3: Laying the Foundation for Training
There is so much to teach your new best friend, and starting as early as possible will set your puppy up for success. Every interaction with your puppy can be a lesson, from the way you greet them to the way you respond to their behavior. This shapes their understanding of trust, boundaries, and communication.
Puppies have the ability to start more complex training at 7-8 weeks, but it's ok to start small with simple commands and familiar words. Short leash walks and letting them outside every 30 minutes to potty creates a routine that allows them to adjust to a regular schedule. Dogs thrive in environments when they know what is coming next. Remember, your Labradoodle’s eagerness to please is one of the breed’s best traits, so nurture it early!
Week 4: Growing Confidence & Routine
By week four, your hard work is starting to pay off. As your puppy becomes more comfortable in their new home, you can begin introducing new experiences like short car rides, meeting new people, and even walks in the park. New experiences at this age help shape a dog who's confident and adaptable for life. It’s also a great time to celebrate how far they’ve come. Puppies grow up fast, so cherish their puppy stage while it lasts!
FUN IDEA
Start a puppy journal or photo series this week. You'll blink, and they'll be grown, documenting even the small stuff (first time on the stairs! first car ride!) makes for the most precious keepsake.
Looking Ahead
The first month with your puppy is full of sweet moments and plenty of learning. The journey ahead includes puppy training classes (so worth it), ongoing socialization, playdates with other dogs, and a whole lot of adventures you haven't thought of yet. The foundation you've built this month? It shows in everything that comes next.
We’d love to hear about your experience! Share your puppy’s first-month milestones or any questions you have in the comments. If you’re looking for more guidance, explore our resources on our website, or feel free to contact us with any other questions!
