Back-to-School Guide: Helping Your Labradoodle Adjust to a New Routine

Summer has a way of changing everyone's schedule. Kids are home, vacations are in full swing, and your pup gets used to having company for most of the day.

Then, almost overnight, school starts again. The house becomes quiet, morning routines get busier, and your doodle suddenly finds themselves spending much more time alone. Just like people, dogs thrive on consistency. A sudden change in routine can lead to boredom, anxiety, or unwanted behaviors if they aren't given time to adjust.

The good news? With a little preparation, you can help your puppy transition smoothly into the school year. Here are a few simple ways to make the back-to-school season easier for both you and your pup.

Ease Into the New Routine

Rather than waiting until the first day of school to change your schedule, start adjusting your dog's routine a week or two ahead of time.

Feed meals, go on walks, and schedule potty breaks at the times they'll happen once school begins. If your Labradoodle has become accustomed to sleeping in or spending every afternoon with the family, gradually introduce periods where they're home alone.

Making these small changes ahead of time helps your dog understand that a new routine is coming, instead of a sudden shift overnight.

Prevent Separation Anxiety

Many dogs experience stress when family members suddenly disappear for several hours each day.

If your Labradoodle follows you everywhere around the house during the summer, begin practicing short departures before school starts. Leave for 15–30 minutes, then gradually increase the amount of time you're away.

When you leave, avoid making a big production out of saying goodbye. Likewise, keep greetings calm when you return home. This teaches your puppy that people leaving and coming back is simply part of everyday life.

Crate training your dog is a great way to help ease their anxiety. It is a space just for them where they can ease their minds and feel secure. Leaving a favorite toy or a familiar-smelling blanket can also help create positive associations with alone time.

Create a Comfortable Space

Having a designated place to relax can help your Labradoodle feel safe when they're home alone. Make their crate somewhere where they want to spend their time with:

  • A comfortable bed

  • Favorite toys

  • Fresh water

  • A fan or a white noise machine

  • A blanket that smells like home

Some dogs also enjoy watching the outdoors through a window, while others feel more secure with the curtains closed. Pay attention to what helps your doodle stay the calmest.

Keep Their Minds Busy

A bored Labradoodle is often a mischievous Labradoodle.

Without kids running through the house or backyard play sessions throughout the day, your dog will need new ways to stay mentally engaged.

Try rotating enrichment activities such as:

  • Food puzzle toys

  • Frozen toys filled with peanut butter or plain Greek yogurt

  • Safe chew toys

  • Treat-dispensing puzzles

Burn Off Energy Before the Day Begins

One of the best ways to prevent destructive behavior is to exercise your Labradoodle before everyone heads out for the day. Even a 20- 30 minute walk, game of fetch, or backyard play session can help them run off some energy. Physical exercise combined with mental stimulation helps your dog relax and rest while the house is empty.

If mornings are rushed, consider taking a longer walk in the evening to help balance out the day.

After-School Playtime

When everyone gets home, your Labradoodle will probably be excited to see their favorite people again. Instead of immediately jumping into homework or chores, spend a few minutes reconnecting with your dog.

For kids, this can also become a fun daily responsibility that teaches consistency and builds confidence with their furry friend!

Make the Most of Fall Adventures

The return to school doesn't mean the fun has to end! Cooler temperatures make fall one of the best seasons to enjoy time outside with your Labradoodle.

Some favorite autumn activities include:

  • Exploring a new hiking trail

  • Visiting a dog-friendly pumpkin patch

  • Taking weekend trips to the park

  • Enjoying longer walks without the summer heat

Keeping fun activities on the calendar gives both you and your dog something to look forward to after a busy week.

Final Thoughts

The transition from summer to the school year is an adjustment for the whole family, including your Labradoodle. By gradually introducing a new routine, providing plenty of exercise and mental enrichment, and making time to reconnect each day, you can help your doodle feel comfortable as life gets busy again.

Before long, your dog will settle into the new schedule, and you'll both be ready to enjoy everything the fall season has to offer!
