July 4th Survival Guide: Fireworks, Travel, & Summer Safety for Your Labradoodle

The Fourth of July is full of fun and celebration, but it can be a bit overwhelming for our four-legged family members. The combination of scorching summer heat, booming noises, and busy holiday travel means your pup might require a little extra preparation to stay happy and healthy.

We want to help you and your doodle navigate the holiday weekend with ease, so we’ve put together the ultimate July 4th survival guide!

Preparing for Fireworks

Fireworks are one of the leading causes of pet anxiety during the summer. Because Labradoodles are so in tune with their surroundings and their owners, planning ahead can make a world of difference for your dog.

• Create a Safe Haven: Set up a quiet, interior room in your house (like a bedroom or a basement) away from windows where your Labradoodle can retreat. Bring in their crate, bed, blankets, and comforting toys.

• Mask the Noise: Close all windows and turn on a loud fan, an AC unit, or a white noise machine to help drown out the noise. Playing calming classical music or leaving the TV on a low volume can also help soothe anxious pups.

• Firework Desensitization Training: One of the best ways to help your Labradoodle prepare for fireworks is through gradual desensitization. Before the holiday, play fireworks at a very low volume while your puppy is relaxed. Reward their calm behavior with treats, praise, or play.

• Wear them out: Take your pup on a long, vigorous hike, play an intense game of fetch, or arrange an active playdate earlier in the day. A physically exhausted dog is much more likely to sleep through the noise than one with pent-up energy.

Holiday Weekend Travel Tips

If your plans involve packing up the car and heading to a lake house, a campsite, or a relative's backyard barbecue, bringing your Labradoodle will require a little extra planning.

• Buckle Up Safely: Traffic can be heavy and unpredictable around the holidays. Keep your doodle secure in the car using a crash-tested travel crate or a safety harness that clips into the seatbelt receiver.

• Never Leave a Dog in a Hot Car: Even with the windows cracked, the inside of a car can reach dangerous, life-threatening temperatures in mere minutes. When you stop for a bathroom break or to grab road-trip snacks, make sure someone stays behind with the dog and with the AC running.

• Make a Doodle Packing List: Don't forget to pack enough of your dog's regular food to last the entire trip, along with a few favorite toys to keep them entertained and comfortable. Bring collapsible water bowls so they can stay hydrated during hikes and other adventures. It's also a good idea to pack a grooming brush to remove any burrs or debris they may collect while exploring.

Double-Check That Microchip!

Did you know that more pets go missing on the Fourth of July than on any other day of the year? Loud noises can cause even the calmest and best-trained dog to panic, jump fences, or bolt out of an open car door. 

Before the holiday weekend arrives, make sure your Labradoodle's microchip is registered and that your contact information is completely up to date. Additionally, ensure they are wearing a secure collar with an ID tag that includes your current phone number. It takes about five minutes to log online and check your registry, but it will offer invaluable peace of mind.

Beat the Heat: Paw and Water Safety

July brings some of the hottest and busiest days of the year, and keeping your Labradoodle cool and safe should be a top priority.

Watch the Sidewalks: Asphalt and concrete trap heat and can easily burn your dog's sensitive paw pads. If the pavement is too hot for you to comfortably press the back of your hand against it for 7 seconds, it is much too hot for your doodle’s feet! Stick to walking on the grass during the hottest parts of the day, or schedule your walks for early morning and late evening. If your dog must walk on the asphalt, dog boots can provide a comfortable barrier against high temperatures, making walks safer and more enjoyable.

Water Safety First: Many Labradoodles absolutely love the water, but holiday-weekend boat traffic, crowded beaches, and backyard pool parties introduce new risks. Never leave your dog unattended near water. If you are going out on a lake or a boat, invest in a well-fitting dog life jacket with a handle on the back to keep them safe and easy to grab.

July Activities Your Labradoodle Will Love

Just because the big celebration happens at night doesn't mean your doodle has to miss out on the daytime holiday fun! There are plenty of safe, festive ways to include your dog in the July festivities:

• Host a Backyard Splashtacular: If your doodle loves water, set up a hard-plastic kiddie pool or a dog-friendly splash pad in a shaded area of the yard. Throw in some floating toys, and let them splash around to burn off energy before the evening festivities begin.

• Early Morning Nature Hike: Beat the heat and the crowds by taking your dog on an early morning hike on a shaded, wooded trail. The extra mental stimulation from all the new scents will help tire them out, making them much sleepier and relaxed by the time evening comes.

Before you go, check your town's website to confirm that dogs are welcome and that the event won't be too crowded or noisy for your pup. A parade can also provide a great opportunity for positive socialization while letting your dog take part in the holiday festivities.

Keep 'Em Cool with Homemade Treats

While you're grilling up burgers and hot dogs (which should be kept far away from your pup's stomach to prevent pancreatitis!), you can treat your Labradoodle to their own special cooling snacks.

Easy DIY Pupsicles: Mix plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt with a handful of mashed blueberries or dog-safe peanut butter (always double-check that your peanut butter is completely xylitol-free!). Pour the mixture into ice cube trays or silicone molds and freeze overnight. These refreshing treats are a great way to keep your dog hydrated and occupied while you enjoy your holiday meal.
